Here are some answers to questions I'm often asked

Can young people get a book published?

According to the Guiness Book of World Records, the youngest person ever to be published was Dorothy Straight, who wrote a book called 'How the World Began' when she was just four years old!  It doesn't matter how old you are, as long as a publisher wants your book.  But remember that it can take a while for this to happen and the most important thing is to enjoy writing, whether it is published or not.

Who do I show my book to if I want it published?

Before sending your book to a publisher, it's a good idea to get some friends to read it first, to see what they think.  Then have a good think and decide whether you need to do some more work on it.  You might have to write it all over again to make it better.  Don't worry, it is normal for writers to write several drafts before they send their books out.

How much does it cost to publish a book?

If your book is published by a proper publisher, it won't cost you anything - they pay you!  But, if you want to publish the book yourself, then it will cost you.

How long does it take before your book is in the shops?

Before your book reaches the shops, it has to be turned into an actual book. That means a cover has to be designed, an illustrator to do drawings if necessary and then it has to go to the printers to be put together.  Then it has to be sent out to all the shops.  This can take a long time - anything from 6 months to 2 years!

Will having a book published make you rich?

Probably not.  If you are very lucky, you might make lots of money, but most writers don't.  It's important to write because you love writing, not because you want to make lots of money.  If you want to be a writer, you might have to have another job as well.

Are you famous?

Have you heard of me?  Then I must be famous!
